Update: I've manage to resolve the issue by having going into the nvidia control panel 3d setting, and telling nvidia to force java to run on the nvidia gpu and allow nvidia's drivers override program settings. Note: this isn't necessary to do when running minecraft version 1.7.10 and earlier. only the new snapshots require this change.
