Update: Crashes frequently occur while breaking dirt. The tool used does not seem to matter.
I have this problem too.
This happened to me as well. I logged back in and fell to death at the world spawn point. Very strange. I am using version 1.8.0.
Thank you for your hard work and for continuing to update a game that I have loved for many years.
The time varies from a few seconds to a few minutes. It's really just when breaking a block.
Yes, the crashes only seem to occur with Caves and Cliffs enabled.
