In your world, are mob drops disabled in the world settings?
This has happened a lot when I'm playing survival with my friends, but not when I'm by myself.
I'm having the same problem on Xbox One. (1.14.60)

This usually happens for me when I load into a world, and putting a torch in the dark area for a second usually fixes it.
