Actually i think this should be a feature you can toggle. might be helpfull
Ok so I restarted the game a third time and now it works with my controller but i would like this to be investigated sometime
this has been going on since 1.11.1 as far as I am aware
this is valid and game breaking
I have been having this problem on my Xbox one for a month now, I can play on my phone and sign in there (Pocket edition) but I cant sign into minecraft on my Xbox to play on worlds there, that I can not other wise access without signing into my Xbox.
I have in fact reported this bug to Dev team that fixes account outages in general a few times last month but nothing has changed or been fixed so i assume this is something for you to fix Mojang.

I have this same problem and now I cant farm obsidian from nether portals
it is not suposed to work like that

It might be good to use a texture pack for the time being. It might work as a temporary fix.
