Hi rayce,
Windows 8 has some problems with minecraft. Either A)Restarting PC fully (Holding power down for the full 4 seconds than turning it on, not hibernating) or
B) Downloading Minecraft.exe again.
Don't worry, downloading it again won't delete your progress. Hopefully you won't encounter another problem like this again.

Can you explain what you mean by scared? Do you mean that they act like they do at night, or they run around frantically?
