For me, there just isn't a laser at all, just the bubbles.
The same thing happens to me! I can hear the laser charging up, but other than that, my only warning is the bubbles flashing! The laser just doesn't render!
This still happens to me. I've got a little windmill with a few farmer villagers, and when they're entering/leaving in groups, it sounds like violent gunfire.
