You are supposed to use a pickaxe. That is the only tool that will successfully mine coal and stone. Lapis Lazuli, Redstone, Gold, and Diamond all require a Iron Pickaxe or better. Iron requires a Stone Pickaxe or better. Obsidian is only mineable with a Diamond Pickaxe.
