This is probably because your on a void world, with ice. And your render distance is so low you see the void, through the ice.
And the packed ice is considered a "solid block", so you cannot see through it.
this extends to other sounds as well. I noticed it when opening and closing my inventory next to a empty dispenser hooked up to a clock. the clock usually was at regular intervals near a second but when opening my inventory it had an extra tick.

Strange, in other versions it did, I stepped on it and it lit up and made power, great for the Colored Pressure plates.
Are you in SinglePlayer? If so, the /Kill command acts as in Killing yourself, unlike servers it doesn't kill other Players, but yourself, if you were on LAN with a random person, (E,I Notch) and you did /Kill Notch then it would actually kill the player who was doing it, so if you do Kill @p or @p Kill, and Kill xland44, you're basically telling the command block to Kill itself.
clicking off the window while on this screen gives same result. maximizing a Google chrome window to be exact.

A better term for this might be that invisibility does not toggle on riding entities. The pig becomes invisible if a splash potion. However, this can be abused as it provides infinite invisibility until you get off of the pig.
