This is an intended feature. This is because the wood in the Nether is not actually "wood," but a fungus that is resistant to fire.
This bug could be fixed by placing the player on the obsidian platform instead of a generated end stone island.
This bug is merely caused by unloading the dimension. This can also be done with some tnt and a 4 chunk Simulation distance. Launching the pearl (or any persistence required: true entity) out of the simulation distance will end its momentum.
