Realms are failing to load - shows loading spinner or "Unable to connect to realms" message

I just want to join the Realm, but as soon as I go to Play > Realms, I only see a loading animation. My friend is experiencing the same issue on another PC with a different internet connection, nothing loads. It's outrageous to pay money for a server that you can't join.
