Lava sets you on fire when you stand over it and are 1-2 pixels away from it. The idea is that if you are on the same level as the lava but a block away (if you are not standing over it yet), you receive damage not from fire but from spit, as if you were drowning in lava.

I’m not entirely sure what behavior is being described here.
I tried shifting on the edge of a full block over lava in survival on 1.21.11 and didn’t get set on fire.
Could you be a bit more specific about the positioning or steps needed to reproduce this?
