when using a potion of night vision, occasionally everything will go completely black, no matter what, even if the potion effect is still active, the only way to fix this is by placing a torch (other blocks may work. This normally occurs when under a roofed area, e.g cave, house, arena.
Steps for how to reproduce:
1. go on a world and make sure you are on survival mode
2. drink a potion of night vision
3. make sure there are blocks above your head
4. wait for a while (maybe mine a bit)
5. screen will go black
6. place a torch
7. effect will go away for a while and then come back

No, it stays light, but after a while (especially with longer duration potions) it will go black again, also only torches not other blocks will work
Also related: Drinking a night vision potion and a blindness potion together will cause the same effect.
Still happens
I can confirm that this bug exists from 1.4.5 to 1.4.6 pre-release. Also it happens regardless of what gamemode the player is on.
It's still happening, however, it happened to me when in creative, so it's not limited to only Survvial.
Is there a chance we could get some sort of confirmation from the admins that this will be looked into/fixed?
Technically all issues should be looked into (and fixed), but there is always priority for this. To increase priority for issues, simply vote them up.
I can confirm this issue for snapshot 13w05b.
If you use blindness+night vision effect, it happens the same (very reliable way to reproduce)
Can we get a confirmation of whether this happens in 13w10a and an update to the affected versions?
I can confirm it using blindness+night vision in 13w10a. I don't know for the original way put in the post
I can confirm this still happens in the original way listed in the description in 13w10a

Can confirm on Minecraft 1.5.2. After ~10minutes of night vision -> blackout. This happens only on intel videocards (has two computers with Intel HD Graphics, it happens, has three computers with ATI, not happens)

Follow updating graphics card drivers.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.6.2 / Launcher version 1.2.1 with current, updated graphics card drinvers ? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
To update the graphics card drivers follow these instructions: Updating Graphics Card Drivers.
Do not rely on automatic searches for driver updates.
Do not use Windows Update or Device Manager - Microsoft doesn't install OpenGL, they promote DirectX.
If you know the brand and type of your graphics card, go to the links provided above and search manually for the most recent driver for your card. The automatic detection tools of the card manufacturers is not recommended.
Yes, i can confirm it on 1.6.2 with 1.2.1 launcher.
There no updates for my graphics card since April 2013.
PS: Game behavior don't depend on Launcher.
Ok thanks, can anyone confirm this with any graphics card except Intel ?
Never noticed on my notebook with ATI graphics card.
This happened to me while I was making underground catacombs for a pyramid I'd been working on. I was using a night vision potion until I put up torches in the tombs. When the light went out I had a mini heart attack. One of the scariest moments of my life. Unfortunately I can't confirm the glitch with anything but an Intel graphics card. My card is an Intel(R) HD Family.
it only started to happen for me in the recent (13w38a) snapshot, before that this never happened. Now it happens like every 10 minutes with the night vision effect
Confirmed to be very common in 13w38a.
For me, it only starts happening once the potion is about to wear off (i.e. fewer than ten seconds remain). If I let it wear off, or expose myself to any form of light, the blackout glitch goes away. However, if I splash myself with another night vision potion, the blackout effect continues, lasting the full duration of the effect if I don't approach any light during that time.
I was surprised when I first encountered this while playing with the Phosphor shader (that's vanilla). The screen did a slow fade to black, and I couldn't fix it because I didn't know it was thanks to the Night Vision. I thought it was the shader (in fact, the changes to rendering may have made this bug more common in 13w38a). Surprisingly, the game crashed not too long after this.
I'll be posting that crash report. Again, this was an actual crash, not a forced F3+C crash. I don't know whether the crash was due to this bug, a bug in Phosphor, or Phosphor reacting poorly to this bug in particular. I'll also post a world download, as the bug persists upon reload, at least on the laptop I tried this on.
Note: the bug does not persist when loaded on my desktop which never experienced this bug, but it always happens when loading that file on my laptop. So if you can't reproduce it, that's not a fault of the file: chances are you'd only be able to reproduce it with a similar graphics card.
Also added some screenshots of how this looks on 13w38a.
The ones with a skyline and clouds are actually immediately upon reload; Phosphor is the only reason I managed to capture them in time. Otherwise, without shaders the skyline will flicker like that for an instant after world reload. These screenshots were taken underground, by the way.
Voted upon. I'm trying to make a map and relying heavily on Night Vision as well as 1.7 command features to make it. Thanks for the torch trick, I wasn't aware of that.
I have had this happen when I have both Blindness and Night vision on at one time.
...maybe the potion is giving you both effects?
No, the inventory screen and NBT editors only indicate Night Vision. No Blindness effect is present.
Confirmed in 13w41a/b. I have found that another trick to stop it is to get within ~2 blocks of an open (to the sky) area. No shaders, no blindness, and it still happens. It's even happened to me with ~4 minutes left for the effect.
confirmed in 1.6.4, also in creative mode.
/tp to somewhere else takes out of black screen but it reappears later
Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 13w42b? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
I've tested it in both 13w42b and 13w43a. Both versions are still affected by this bug.
please update to also include 1.7
and 1.7.1 and 1.7.2
I am still having a problem with this issue in 1.7.2.
I currently have a similar issue. In my single player game i use night vision potions while working underwater on a lake project. I've noticed that it usually only occurs when I am below water. Water is probably the equivalent to the cave or overhang ceilings in my case. i use version 1.7.2 and have never had this problem until today. The only way I have found to fix it is to swim up. placing torches or glowstone did not fix it. it is mildly annoying and occurs ever few minutes of block placing or removing. Hope this helps in getting the bug fixed.
[1.7.2] I found that it occurred for me, about every 30 seconds, while I was building an underground staircase in creative, almost solid mining and placing. I have the latest graphics drivers etc.
I get this from time to time when building in Creative mode and using the /effect command. The only way I can "see" when it happens is to place a torch.
It might be related to lighting updates. Watch mumbo's or Xisumavoid's videos where they did the ABBA Caving.
So far I haven't noticed this in 13w48b.
Possibly fixed. Resolved for now. I will reopen if someone reports this again.
Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 14w08a? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Cannot reproduce in 08a
had this issue last night on 1.7.2, yeah it's an old version now but proves there is still some issue, only happened for one of the two that were playing and was very random and hard to replicate, but there is still some kind of glitch
Tom McQueen: The issue has been fixed in the latest snapshot, which is why old versions are ignored.
If you break the torch, will it turn back black again ?
