When looking at the note on https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/4408894664461-Minecraft-Java-Edition-Skins, it states you must migrate to a Mojang Studios account, however this is outdated information as all accounts are now required to migrate to a Microsoft Account to continue playing.
