Armour with Protection on it seems to reduce against hunger damage

With a diamond helmet, breastplate and leggings all enchanted with Protection IV, and unenchanted iron boots, when my hunger bar dropped to zero I still only took half a heart of damage every second or third time I heard the 'crack' damage noise.
