Elytra can Become "Too Expensive" to Repair at Anvils

The new Elytra/Wings can become too expensive too repair at anvils.

This is most likely unintentional since Elytra are meant to be reusable indefinitely.

Once Elytra aren't possible to repair at an anvil, the player will have to load new chunks to find an End Ship for a fresh new pair of Elytra.

Potentials ways I can think of to fix this is are:

  • A: Prevent the repair cost of Elytra from going up.

  • B: Make Elytra repairable through crafting with leather. Each piece of leather restores the Elytra's durability by 25% of its max.

Anyway, please get this issue fixed. Otherwise, a pair of Elytra will eventually become completely useless, and that won't be fun. ;l

This isn't much of a bug, more a suggestion.

Closing as invalid because this is a feature request; unless you can find a source for this statement:

Elytra are meant to be reusable indefinitely.

Let me explain this to you.
Elytra cannot break. But instead, if their durability falls to 0, they can't be used for gliding/flying (their use) anymore until they're repaired at an anvil. With this system, Mojang probably intended to let them be used indefinitely, as long as the player keeps repairing them.
However, as I show in the attached screenshot, they can become "too expensive" to repair after the Elytra were repaired 6 times. Therefore, a pair of Elytra doesn't have an infinite usage which goes against the possible reasoning behind making them not 'break'.
This should be fixed before 1.9 is officially released. Otherwise, the player would have to load new chunks (which makes world files bigger) to find an End Ship for a new pair of Elytra.

Right, RedstoneHelper. Thanks for the clarification. 😉

0/1 durability elytra can probably still be used to reset the repairing cost by repairing in a crafting interface. Still, your point is not entirely incorrect. I'll reopen it, but I honestly doubt this is a bug.

So, 15w42a was released today, and it looks like that Jeb and Mojang have decided on a new system. The Mending enchantment was introduced. An item with this enchantment will have its durability restored, if needed, as the player collects experience. Exp. goes to the mendable item instead of the player.
Therefore, elytra can be infinitely repaired if it has Mending. However, enchanted books with Mending will only be found in the world, like elytra. Locations haven't been implemented nor confirmed at this time.

Resolving as invalid again.

This seems to be affecting 1.13.2 and probably 1.14.  I can't even rename the elytra because it's "too expensive" or put mending on it.

Then make sure to enchant your elytra with an unbreaking enchantment so that you could get rid of the repair cost in a grindstone, otherwise that elytra will only be good for repairing other elytras with the grindstone specifically.

I did a test of 1.14, the issue appears to be resolved, but my test was not very thorough.
