if you build a construction like on the screenshot, the Item, that is being dropped, is not flying straight ahead, but it's flying a bit more to the left (right corner of the screenshot)

The dispenser fires the item a bit off center. When the slime block is pushed into the item, it both gets shot up and tries to escape the block, which causes it to go to the side.
