I went in the Nether, heard that signature hiss, ran away, and died. I had an iron chestplate on, but it offered no protection whatsoever. 29 and a half levels down the drain. Yay. Anyone else had this happen?

Must've gone through the portal, or that's a glitch. As for the iron chestplate, you're right about it not offering much protection, but it shouldn't have killed me. I've never died from a creeper explosion in an iron chestplate before.
Creepers don't naturally spawn in the nether and an iron chestplate doesn't offer much protection.
