Hanging signs cannot be placed on non-full blocks

Hanging signs cannot be placed on non-full blocks, despite the ability that they can float.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Place a stair on the ground with the stepping part facing you.

  2. Then take a hanging sign and try to place it on the left or right side of the front.

The report is NOT suggesting that signs should not float, as in MC-256501. The bug I want to report is actually the opposite: hanging signs can float, but you can’t place them against non-full blocks.

I must admit that it is difficult to show in the video or explain it, but maybe it becomes clearer with these steps to reproduce:

Β Β  1. Place a stair on the ground with the stepping part facing you.
Β Β  2. Then take a hanging sign and try to place it on the left or right side of the front.

In that case, that's a feature / change request, not a bug. Per the changelog linked in MC-256501:

Unlike normal Signs, they cannot be placed directly on the ground without support from the side or above

Stairs don't provide support from the side. You can hang signs from their backside, where there's a full solid face, but not from their side.
