Shard order for decorated pot makes no sense

Considering the order is (shard, brick, shard, brick) one would expect to get a pot with two opposite sides (maybe south/north) with decoration. But instead I get two adjacent sides  (north & east) decorated. This is entirely unexpected and weird.
