Opening the game menu with Esc and opening another application can freeze visuals

I opened the game menu with Esc, edited a document in Notepad++, and upon trying to exit the menu I found that the visuals of the game froze. All controls still worked, and sounds could still be heard when breaking blocks and such, but the visuals stayed locked in the main game menu screen and the background did not change.
