Abnormal entity shadow rendering

Shadows for entities are not rendered as a single circle, but rather as a sheet of multiple circles (reminiscent of a pattern from the 1960s). I first noticed this issue in 1.10.2, but it seems to persist in 1.11.2 as well. I'm not sure if it's an LWJGL issue or an issue with Mesa or perhaps even a driver issue. I can't say for sure when this appeared as I haven't been playing Minecraft actively enough to notice.

There you go. While I'm at it I'll see what this looks like in Windows. I can't imagine it there too but who knows.

Checked in Windows 10 and it was fine. But that 2 year old rotation bug is there.

Tried this on a fresh install of Mint 18.1, before any of the updates were installed.

There it works, so maybe I can see where it breaks and find a work around.

So it turns out this issue shows up when updating Mesa. I'm attaching the glxinfo output for before (working) and after (broken) Mesa is updated.

So this issue seems to have corrected itself in the last MESA update.
